AI Denoise

Master the Grain Monster With AI Denoise in Lightroom

Adobe is globally known for pushing the envelope on cutting-edge photography tools and breaking barriers. The newly released Lightroom update, which works on versions 12.3 for Lightroom Classic, 15.3 for Adobe Camera Rw and 6.3 for the cloud or Lightroom version, is taking the industry by storm.

The Lightroom Classic provides Curves to use within the Masking Panel, answering the many users screaming for the feature. However, the most exciting part of the new update is undoubtedly the AI-powered Denoise tool.

Best Features of AI Denoise Update

One of the best features of the update is the superior noise-reduction tool. Of all the other AI programs, Lightroom is head and shoulders above the rest. Albeit it comes with limitations, it can achieve the level of noise filtering that no other software, to date, has been capable of.

The AI-Denoise update is an amazing way to save images that you couldn’t before. If you’ve got a shot that didn’t turn out so great, let the photo editing professionals at Orkra.com help you get the most out of it.

How to Use AI Denoise in Lightroom

Another of the most praised components of the AI Denoise update is that it is easy to use and can remove noise from underexposed or high-ISO images. If you follow the steps below, you can rescue images that would have ended up on the cutting room floor before this filter.

  1. Open your raw image (Note: Currently, only X-Trans and Bayer raw files are supported.)
  2. Select the Denoise function
  3. Go to the menu bar and select “Photo > Enhance” or directly select Denoise from the Detail panel
  4. View the Entire Picture
  5. Find and click on the magnifying glass icon to view the entire image
  6. Next, find the Details
  7. Locate the area you want to detail and click on it to see the effect
  8. Determine the Filter Strength

A menu for the amount of denoise will appear. Use the slider to intensify or lessen the filter to achieve the desired effect.

View the Before and After Image

If you press and hold with your cursor on the preview image, you can compare the before and after effects of the tool.

Enhance Image

Click on the “Enhance” option to generate a DNG file.

The option “Enhance-NR” will be added as an append to the original filename aside from the original, or it might appear stacked, depending on the option you choose.

Compare

You are then able to select and view both images by using the “View > Compare” function to see the images side-by-side.

Using the New Masking Features

Another great tool that the AI Denoise upgrade affords is the ability to alter the appearance of people with elements like facial hair, alternate clothing and many more masks. Masking also provides a Curve function, which allows you to make an image appear sharper. To use this tool:

  1. Go to the “Develop” module and open an image
  2. Select the option “Masking > People”
  3. Lightroom Classic will then both detect and be able to mask all of the people in the image. You can individually select the subject to edit and use options such as Clothes or Facial Hair and make the changes you select from there
  4. To continue, open the mask in the “Masks” panel function and then you can select either Add or Subtract, according to your preferences
  5. The editing sliders are located in the right panel. Click on them to adjust as needed

Use Curve for More Precise Edits

You can use Curve within the Masking update and it will allow you to make more precise edits. It is capable of doing so without affecting the rest of the image. To use this function:

  1. Go to the Develop module and choose your image
  2. Select the “Masking” option from the tool options and then “Create New Mask”
  3. Next, select “Curve”
  4. From there, you can adjust using the “Curve” function to enhance the image. The “Histogram” function allows values to be attributed to the adjustments according to the masked sections chosen

Quickly Find Tools to Edit Images

You can quickly find useful tools for editing using the reconfigured panels. Go to the “Develop” module and you will see the new eye indicator. The panel has functions like “Healing, Masking and Redeye.” When you press and hold the function, it will hide the setting according to a particular panel. That way, you can instantly view changes made to the image.

The eye indicator function will alter from light to dark according to how a panel is used. You will also be able to see a dot on the tool strip directly under the used tool.

By holding Option on macOS or Alt on Windows, you can see the various panel switches rather than the eye icon. You can also use this to reset the image you edited. If you turn the panel switch to off, the eye icon, you will see that the panel is disabled.
